Atlanta Contemporary Art Center To Open Solo Exhibitions
Laura Noel, Amy, 2005.
ATLANTA, GA.-Solo exhibitions by installation/performance artist Anissa Mack, photographer Judy Linn, and sculptor Russell Maltz, as well as a group show featuring the work of David Knox, Laura Noel, and Mary O’Horo, open at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on Friday, February 8, 2007; the shows end on March 29. An opening artists’ reception will take place on February 8, from 7 – 9 pm at the Contemporary. On February 8, Judy Linn will discuss the influence of people and place on her practice; and on February 9, Anissa Mack & Russell Maltz will discuss their respective approaches to site-specific installation.

February 8 – March 29, 2008 - Patrons’ Preview, Friday, February 8, 6 – 7 pm; Artists’ Reception, Friday, February 8, 7 - 9 pm. Judy Linn Artist’s Talk, Friday, February 8, 12 pm. Anissa Mack and Russell Maltz Artists’ Talks, Saturday, February 9, 11 am – 1 pm.

Anissa Mack: To Be Sung As A Round examines complex conditions of memory, place, and tradition through the use of photography and sculpture. Combining fabricated metals with collected items, Mack creates sculptures that evoke nostalgia and subtle humor, challenging the viewer’s expectations and morals. Her recent photographs document the simple act of dispensing ice from a hotel machine may suggest the isolation or, perhaps, the romance of the lonely traveler.

Judy Linn: Early Recent Late Photographs 1970 – 2007 captures the spontaneous encounters of everyday life. Shooting in black and white and occasionally in color, Linn takes photographs in urban or rural landscapes of people, animals, and nature that offer surprising juxtapositions of scale, displacement, and gesture.

Russell Maltz: In The Process of Becoming: Painted/Stacked (For Sol LeWitt) uses common commercial materials, such as painted cinder-blocks and ply wood to create minimalist environments, often in dialog with existing architecture. Maltz has worked in diverse public areas, such as college campuses, parking lots, shopping centers, as well as galleries.

Selections from the Studio Program: David Knox, Laura Noel, Mary O’Horo each present new works in this group show. Photographer David Knox documents the American South’s architectural ruins while Laura Noel’s subject consists of portraits and a series of visual short stories about the lives of strangers. Mary O’Horo’s work is based on her personal interest in scientific principles and their relationship to metaphysical concepts.

Since 1973, the Contemporary’s Studio Artists Program has provided subsidized studio space and technical and informational support to artists. There are currently fourteen studios made available through the program.

Founded in 1973, the Contemporary is a non-profit multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to excellence, experimentation and education in all forms of contemporary art.
