VIENNA.- Werner Hofmann, born in 1928 in Vienna, is one of the most important art historians in the German language region and was the founding director of the Museums des 20. Jahrhunderts [Museum of the 20th Century], MUMOK's precursor. The collection presentation reminds one of this, it shows a extensive selection of his acquisitions and places works by André Derain, Fernand Léger, Frantisek Kupka, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka, Henri Matisse, Giacomo Balla, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Hans Arp, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Lucio Fontana or Maria Lassnig in relation to Hofmann's writings on art theory. For Werner Hofmann modernity is not a coherent project but rather a playing field of rescinded limits, mixtures, revocations; an arena of opposites and contradictions. For Hofmann is characterised by multiple views and can only be experienced in this way. Its attributes are mixed realities and styles, multi-reality and multi-materiality. Thus the formal structure offers a number of views and foci that are not only distributed over various levels of languages but also over various levels of content.
