First Time in Denmark for Yang Fudong: China in Transition at GL Strand
Yang Fudong, No Snow on the Broken Bridge.
COPENHAGEN.- For the first time the Chinese star artist Yang Fudong will be showing his work in Denmark. In his spectacular video and photo works we learn about China in transition – seen from the inside. His works reveal breathtaking stories about the younger Chinese generation’s experience of history, extreme urbanization and new market economy.

At the very day of the opening of The Olympic Games in Beijing, the exhibition hall GL STRAND opens its doors to the exhibition YANG FUDONG. CHINA IN TRANSITION. In poetic tableaus the video artist Yang Fudong excoriate the extreme contrasting conditions characteristic of China today. Conditions which have led the young generation in a search for history and identity. Yang Fudong takes us on a journey into the geographically, culturally and historically diverse China with black and white nature scenarios and staged youth attitudes often in bold colours.

Yang Fudong (*1971) is among the greatest names on the contemporary international art scene. He lives and works in Shanghai and has over the past ten years received great international recognition throughout the world. His greatest work Seven Intellectuals in Bamboo Forest was one of the most mentioned and praised contributions from last year’s Venice Biennale. Originally trained as a painter from the Chinese Art Academy in Hangzhou in 1995 he began working with video and photography already in 1993 which ever since has been his preferred media of expression. Characteristic for his works is their atmospheric, seductive and mystifying aesthetics.

In connection with the exhibition an extensive program has been arranged which among other events will include an artist talk with Yang Fudong and socalled ’China talks’ with a range of prominent Danish personalities with knowledge about China. The final program will be avaible soon.
