SANTA MONICA, CA.- Greenfield Sacks Gallery presents an exhibition of prints by celebrated California artist Wayne Thiebaud (b.1920). The exhibition will include 16 works in both color and black and white dating from 1965 thru 2006.

Wayne Thiebaud started his career as a graphic artist. From 1938 to 1949, he worked as a sign painter, an illustrator, a cartoonist, and as an artist for Hollywood film studios. This experience as a commercial artist strongly influenced his works. Thiebaud's iconic images of cakes, pies, eyeglasses, balls, and bow ties are all items that could be on display for consumers in department stores. This subject manner subsequently associated Thiebaud's work with the Pop Art Movement.

Printmaking is a major interest of Wayne Thiebaud's. Our exhibition focuses on his etchings and lithographs. These mediums offer a range of texture from the sharp edge of the dry point etching to the soft, pastel quality of the aquatint etching.

Wayne Thiebaud often creates two variations of the same image, as seen in Bow Ties, 1990, one variation in black and white, the other in color. Thiebaud's black and white prints like Eyeglasses, 1994, reveal his talents as a draftsman while his color prints, like Meringue, 1995, reinforce the deliciousness of his desserts and the beauty of his still life.

Wayne Thiebaud continues to be one of our most renowned international artists. Recently the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena presented a Wayne Thiebaud exhibition entitled Sweets and Treats, and currently on view at the Pasadena Museum of California Art is Wayne Thiebaud: 70 Years of Painting.
