SAN ANTONIO, TX.- On Saturday, April 10, 2010,
Artpace marked its 15th year anniversary with a Quinceañera gala at the downtown San Antonio museum, which honored contemporary art philanthropists Jeanne and Mickey Klein, and was co-chaired by Board of Directors members Teresita Fernández and Rick Liberto. The lavish event began with a silent auction featuring approximately thirty works which were donated by Artpace Artist-in-Residence alumni including Isaac Julien, Teresita Fernández, Glenn Ligon, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Robyn O’Neil, Cornelia Parker, Carolee Schneemann and Hale Tenger, and ended with a festive performance by the ten-piece Latin American funk band and orchestra, Grupo Fantasma. Also included in the evening was a sentimental tribute in memory of artist, collector and Artpace founder Linda Pace, with special remarks by Olafur Eliasson and led by Artpace Executive Director Matthew Drutt.
The over 300 international guests included artists, collectors, funders, patrons and supporters such as Suzanne Deal Booth, J. Travis Capps, Jr., Nathan Carter, Leonardo Drew, Janet Lennie Flohr, Alexander Gray, Buster Graybill, Jim Kelly, Toby Devan Lewis, Bert Lies and Rosina Yue, Ken Little, Lawrence Markey, Judith L. Neisser, Cornelia Parker, Chuck Ramirez, Matthew Ronay, Jan Jarboe Russell, Chris Sauter, Mario Ybarra Jr., Claudia Schmuckli, Julie Thornton, Cynthia Toles and Tom Wensinger of Neiman Marcus. The event was supported in part by Neiman Marcus, Julie Thornton, Jeanne and Michael Klein, Valero, Rick Liberto, and Marquee Rentals.
Also in celebration of its 15th anniversary, Artpace recently debuted an ambitious state-wide public exhibition of thirteen seminal billboards created by Cuban-born American artist and inaugural Artist-in-Residence alum Felix Gonzalez-Torres. The revolving exhibition, featuring works created between 1989 and 1995, is the first-ever comprehensive survey of Gonzalez-Torrez’ billboard works in the United States. The exhibition is organized by Matthew Drutt and is sponsored in part by the Linda Pace Foundation, with generous support from Clear Channel Outdoor.
Current Artpace shows include the New Works: 10.1, featuring the most recent Artist-in-Residence artists Buster Grayhill, Klara Liden and Ulrike Müller and Artist-in-Residence curator Helen Molesworth; and exhibitions by Alejandro Cesarco and David Zamora Casas.
