Bertrand Delacroix Gallery presents artists Elizabeth Allison & Joseph Adolphe
Watercolors by Elizabeth Allison and a sculpture by Quentin Garel.
NEW YORK, NY.- This is Elizabeth Allison's premier exhibition at Bertrand Delacroix Gallery. Allison is most well known for her public art installation, River Gazers, in Riverside Park South from June 2011 to June 2012. However, she demonstrates her talent with watercolor in her large scale works on paper in this exhibition. Allison states that she uses her paintings to “record the emotional temperature” of places she has visited that have had an effect on her. Her work unites the artistic medium with the subject as each watermark, drip and spill work together to create the surreal atmospheres that distinguish her pieces.

Allison was born in 1975 in Chicago, Illinois. After receiving her BFA from the University of Michigan, she moved to New York City where she continued her studies at the Art Students League. Allison is the recipient of the Raluca Popescu Memorial Scholarship, the Nessa Cohen Grant, three Elizabeth Greenshields Grants and a chashama Studio Residency. She was a visiting artist at Buffalo State College and is currently a technical instructor at the Art Students League.

This is JOSEPH ADOLPHE ‘s second showing at BDG. His first show, Toro Bravo, was a resounding success and consequently, Adolphe has returned with a selection of new oil paintings. This exhibition includes stunning female nudes, new additions to his Toro Bravo series and pastoral scenes ripe with social commentary. Adolphe’s paintings depict uncertainty, anxiety and vulnerability in the modern day. His subjects appear burdened by conflict and the weight of the world but nonetheless, they are strong, resilient characters. Their confidence and bravery give the paintings an undeniable optimism even when the subject is dark.

Adolphe, born in 1968 in Alberta, Canada, moved to New York City in 1992 to attend the School of Visual Arts where he received his MFA in 1994. He has received several awards, including First Place in the “Figure Now 2010” Competition at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri. In the summer of 2012, his painting, Mars No. 1, was chosen for the cover of Manifest Gallery’s International Painting Annual and his oils will be featured in the upcoming documentary, HEAVYWEIGHTPAINT. His work has been featured in over forty exhibitions since 1998 throughout America and internationally. He now lives with his wife and children in New Haven, Connecticut and is a professor of Fine Arts at St. John’s University in New York.
