Hyde Collection's Picasso travels to German museum for 1912 retrospective
Pablo Picasso, b. Spanish/French, 1881-1973, Boy Holding a Blue Vase, 1905, oil on canvas, 25 5/8 x 11 1/8 in., The Hyde Collection (1971.34)
GLENS FALLS, NY.- The Hyde Collection’s painting Boy Holding a Blue Vase (1905) by Pablo Picasso will be presented in the centennial retrospective exhibition, 1912 – Mission Moderne, at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, Germany from August 31 through December 30, 2012. In 1912, Cologne hosted the International Art Exhibition of the “Sonderbund” (a special association of West German Art Lovers and Artists) whose primary aim was to provide “an overview of the state of the latest movement in painting.” The organizers succeeded in staging the most important exhibition of the pioneers of modern art to be held at that time, and The Hyde’s Boy Holding Blue Vase was installed in the spacious Picasso hall, a gallery dedicated to this major modern artist.

The 1912 International Art Exhibition made a significant contribution to the modern movement in Germany and beyond. It was the model for New York’s 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art, better known as the “Armory Show” that, in turn, blazed the trail for modernism in America. Today, it is viewed as the most significant presentation of European modern art prior to the First World War. 1912 – Mission Moderne features approximately 120 works that were included in this groundbreaking exhibition. The painting from The Hyde Collection joins loans of works from museums across the country including the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, and The Philips Collection.
