ASPEN, CO.- The Aspen Art Museum presents an exhibition by 2012 Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence, Amelie von Wulffen (b. 1966, Breitenbrunn, Germany), on view from July 27 through Sunday, October 7, 2012. This is von Wulffen’s first solo exhibition in an American museum and includes 15 oil paintings, nine of which were created during her time as the AAM 2012 Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence.
Amelie von Wulffen’s paintings and drawings fuse the imaginary and the everyday, conjuring a world that is at once winsome and poignant. Blending abstraction and figuration, romanticism and psychedelia, von Wulffen deploys a host of painterly techniques to create works that are deeply referential. Her large-scale paintings wryly revisit and reprocess tactics and tropes of modern painting from German Expressionism onward, while recent series of drawings have tweaked the conventions of the children’s book, the comic strip, and the storyboard, turning these formats into vehicles for her own psychologically charged narratives.
The AAM Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence Program Founded in 2008 by AAM National Council members Jane and Marc Nathanson, the Aspen Art Museum’s Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence Program furthers the museum’s goal of engaging the larger community with contemporary art. Each residency results in a new body of work produced for and exhibited at the AAM. Past Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artists are Phil Collins (2008); Peter Coffin (2009); Marlo Pascual (2010); and Haegue Yang (2011).
Amelie von Wulffen was born in Breitenbrunn, Germany in 1966, and currently lives and works in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Kunstmuseum Basel, Museum für Gegenwartskunst; and Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf, among others. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and the 3rd Berlin Biennale in 2004.
