The winners of the Bar-Tur Photography Award in 2011 and 2012 will have their work showcased in a dedicated exhibition at Paradise Row Gallery
, London from 21st - 25 August.
From Briony Campbells moving images of her fathers last days, to Blaise Chatelains exuberant image of his friend flying across a lake, the exhibition will reflect the great wealth of creativity and photographic talent the Bar-Tur Award has discovered in the past two years. The award, which is open to students and alumni of University of the Arts London, aims to recognise the immense power photography has to influence the way we engage with the world.
In 2011 entrants were challenged to address one of four themes: the environment, identities, lifestyle and communication. London College of Fashion student Sam Ledger took the overall student prize for his ethereal black and white image 7982619518114.0 while Camberwell College of Arts graduate Briony Campbell took home the top alumni prize for Eating Dads Dinner. The image, from a project she began after her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, records her relationship with her father during his last six months.
In 2012, the theme for the award was Olympian. Central St Martins Graduate Paul Greenleaf won the Alumnus prize for a project The Sporting Life which depicts the activities of grassroots sports clubs commissioned London Borough of Waltham Forest in the run up to the London Olympics. Blaise Chatelain, currently at London College of Communication, took first prize in the Student category for his hair-raising image of a man flying over a lake, while his bicycle falls to earth, illustrating that heroic endeavour is possible outside of Olympic contest.
Founded in 2011 in memory of British artist, Ann Lesley Bar-Tur (1947-1984), who was herself a graduate of Chelsea School of Art (now Chelsea College of Art and Design, part of University of the Arts London), the Bar-Tur Award draws on the wealth of talent and creativity amongst the students and alumni (200,000 worldwide) of the University which is made up of six leading London colleges.
