Exhibition at Project: ARTspace traces quilt traditions in contemporary painting

Caetlynn Booth, Selvage 32, 2024 oil on panel, 12” x 12”.

NEW YORK, NY.- Mindscape is a Pattern articulates the impulse (instinct) to pattern and explores the general influence of quilt-making traditions in the contemporary painting of six artists: Caetlynn Booth, Christopher Dunlap, Debbi Kenote, Bonnie Morano, Evan Peltzman, and Kevin Umaña. The folk-art tradition of the American quilt, composed of textiles with their own patterns and origins, has historically been categorized as a woman's art/craft form in both individual and collective contexts. Because of the ubiquitous nature of this tradition and the quantity of tremendously talented homemakers over time, quilts have touched countless lives, becoming a source for not only warmth, safety, and intimacy but also the ignition point to creativity for so many visual artists. In putting this show together, Booth’s aim is to assemble in one space the paintings of artists whose work she has been following and with whom she shares a deep affinity ... More

Joan Mitchell's "Close" to undergo public conservation in Georgia   Yale University Art Gallery announces acquisition of Tilman Riemenschneider's Virgin and Child Enthroned   South Australia's biggest visual arts celebration returns with thousands of artists statewide

A detail of Joan Mitchell’s painting “Close” showing cracking in the paint.

ATHENS, GA.- For the first time at the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia, art will be conserved in the galleries, in full view of the public. Joan Mitchell’s “Close” has been a popular work in the museum’s collection since it was acquired in 1974, just one year after its creation. This large, abstract expressionist work of art has inspired viewers for decades with its expressive, painterly style and layered complementary colors. Like all paintings, “Close” has aged with time, leading to some cracking in its darker areas. This type of cracking is known as “traction crackle,” which occurs when thickly applied oil paints dry on the canvas. According to art conservator Larry Shutts, traction crackle would usually be stable, but the primer underneath the dark areas on the painting has absorbed extra pigment, making these areas unstable and susceptible to further damage. In celebration of the artist’s 100th birthday, the Joan Mitchell Foundati ... More

Tilman Riemenschneider, Virgin and Child Enthroned (detail), also known as the Seebenstein Madonna, ca. 1500–1505. Limewood with traces of polychromy. Yale University Art Gallery, Maitland F. Griggs, B.A. 1896, Fund and Leonard C. Hanna, Jr., Class of 1913, Fund.

NEW HAVEN, CONN.- The Yale University Art Gallery announced the acquisition of an exceptional example of late Gothic sculpture, a Virgin and Child Enthroned by Tilman Riemenschneider (ca. 1460–1531). This masterpiece, also known as the Seebenstein Madonna, was crafted circa 1505 and greatly enriches the Gallery’s collection of European medieval art. The Virgin and Child Enthroned is masterfully carved from limewood (linden) and stands impressively at three feet tall. The sculpture captures the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, gracefully adorned with flowing draperies that intricately fold around her figure. The Christ Child, both dynamically and tenderly depicted, reaches up toward the Virgin’s chin with his right hand, while the Virgin affectionately gazes down, delicately supporting the Child’s back with her left hand. ... Clingenbosch Garden unveils new Tracey Emin masterpiece   Portland Art Museum announces major David Hockney exhibition   Juliane Gebhardt takes the helm as new Managing Director of Künstlerhaus Stuttgart

Tracey Emin, I promised to follow you to the end, 2024, collection museum Voorlinden.

WASSENAAR.- Sculpture garden Clingenbosch has gained a new gem: the monumental bronze sculpture I followed you to the end (2024) by Tracey Emin. The garden lies just a stone’s throw away from museum Voorlinden and now boasts almost 70 works by artists such as Henry Moore, Sol LeWitt, Jenny Holzer and Giuseppe Penone. Recently, Stages (2024) by the British sculptor Tony Cragg was also added to the collection. At nearly 7 metres in length and weighing 4.7 tonnes, I followed you to the end is one of Tracey Emin’s largest bronze sculptures. The monumental work represents the waist and legs of a kneeling female figure, whose head and upper body appear to have sunk below the ground. Powerful and sexually charged, it is simultaneously imbued with despair and sorrow. After previous installations at White Cube (Bermondsey) and Palazzo Strozzi (Florence), the sculpture has now found its permanent home in the Clingenbosch sculpture ... More

Attenborough Arts Centre launches new exhibition 'We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid'   CAC Vilnius hosts "Garden Exit": A unique look at body, architecture, and environment   Palazzo Ducale Genova opens major exhibition dedicated to Jacopo Benassi's research

Installation view.

LEICESTER .- On the evening of Thursday 17 July, ‘We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid’ launched in Gallery 1 at Attenborough Arts Centre, drawing in over 150 visitors to explore the works of prolific artists from across the glove. Drawn from the David and Indrė Roberts Collection, one of the UK’s foremost private art collections, the exhibition encompasses sculpture, works on canvas, moving image and installation. The artists represented in the exhibition responded to these themes in very different ways, but their practices are connected by a sustained engagement with globally important issues that can often feel too big and too difficult for us to think about. They collect, build, stitch, carve, burn, staple, break and put back together many different materials to shape works that speak about their concerns. This is not an exhibition about art and activism. The artists represented may not consider their work as a form of political activism – indeed, there is no sense that we a ... More

VILNIUS.- Garden Exit – a solo exhibition by Piotr Bury Łakomy taking place in the central exhibition space of the Contemporary Art Centre – presents works produced by the artist specifically for this show. The title subtly references the Garden of Eden but, against its typical occidental interpretation, proposes a conscious exit rather than an exile, thereby suggesting a separation from the idea of pristine nature. This dynamic evokes a deeper set of thoughts that pertain to the division between what is natural and what is artificial, often framed as the distinction between first and second nature. First nature refers to primal, Ur-nature – a state that precedes culture and is considered ‘untouched’. Culture begins with language, habits, and artifice, all of which belong to second nature. Yet, there is hardly anything we perceive today that hasn’t already been mediated by language, by ... More

GENOA.- On view at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa is Jacopo Benassi Libero!, the major solo exhibition dedicated to the photographer’s most recent work, bringing together over one hundred pieces created over the past seven years of activity. The exhibition – curated by Francesco Zanot and set up in the spaces of the Loggia degli Abati from 12 July to 14 September – takes stock of Benassi’s most recent research, from 2018 to today, focusing on the key stages that led him to develop a personal, complex, and recognizable language in which photography, sculpture, painting, music, and performance converge. At the heart of the exhibition project is the work of deconstructing the body of photography and photographic vision. Through a large-scale installation that connects and intertwines over one hundred works — including some of the artist’s most iconic pieces and previously unseen productions — the exhibition questions the role of photography today and its ... On a day like today, American installation artist Jason Rhoades died
August 01, 2006. Jason Rhoades (July 9, 1965 - August 1, 2006) was an installation artist who enjoyed critical acclaim, if not widespread public recognition, at the time of his death, and who was eulogized by some critics as one of the most significant artists of his generation. Better known in Europe, where he exhibited regularly for the last twelve years of his life, Rhoades was recently celebrated for his combination dinner party/exhibitions that feature violet neon signs with African, Caribbean, Creole and hip-hop slang for the female genitalia. His work remains part of the permanent collection in the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, where he was a part of exhibit "Beg Borrow and Steal" at the time of his death.
