Empire State
The Empire State Building in New York is a 102-story sky scraper built in 1931. It is located in midtown Manhattan, on 5th Avenue. The building’s Art Deco design, popular during the early 1900’s, was one of the most monumental completed in that style. Builders Shreve, Lamb & Harmon used a steel frame and reinforced concrete to achieve the record breaking height of 381 meters (1,250 feet). The 67 meter (222 foot) television antenna added in 1950 increased its height to 1,472 feet. The frame of the building was so strong that it even resisted the crash impact of a B-25 Bomber in July 1945 with only minor damage. Until the 1954 construction of the World Trade Center in Chicago, The Empire State Building held the record for the world’s tallest building.
