Hagia Sofia
The Hagia Sofia, also called "Santa Sofia", Church of the Holy Wisdom" and "Ayasofya" (Turkish) is a cathedral built at Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). The construction of the domed basilica, done under the direction of emperor Justinian I, was completed in 537 AD. The architects, Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus took only six years to finish building. After the Turkish conquest in 1453, the cathedral became a mosque and is now a museum. Despite the ravages of time, it was the greatest achievement of Byzantine architecture and is one of the world’s greatest monuments.
