Neuschwanstein
The Neuschwanstein is an elaborate castle built on a rock ledge over the Pöllat George in the Bavarian Alps near Füssen, Germany. It was begun in 1869, by order of Bavaria’s King Louis II, called ¨Mad Ludwig" and was left unfinished until after his death in 1866. A romantic reconstruction of a medieval castle, it comes complete with a walled courtyard, indoor garden, spires, towers and even an artificial cave. Inside, the two-story throne room is modeled after a Byzantine basilica. Stars decorate the blue vaulted ceiling that is supported by red porphyry columns. As Louis was a patron of Richard Wagner, the wall paintings throughout the castle depict Wagnerian themes. In the 4th floor Singers’ Hall is the life of Parsifal. The Tannhäuser saga is in the study and Lohengrin can be found in the great parlor.
