Notre-Dame
The Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Paris is perhaps the most well-known example of Gothic architecture in the world. It is distinguished for its size, antiquity, and architectural interest. The corner stone was laid by Pope Alexander III in 1163. The high altar was consecrated in 1189, but the construction was not completed until 1260. The interior plan is 130 by 48 meters (427 by 157 feet) and the roof is 115 feet high. Spires were to crown the 223 foot high towers but were never added. After centuries of use and deterioration, the church was restored in 1845. Only the three great rose windows retain their original 13th century glass. The architecture is especially noted for the use of special exterior supports called flying buttresses (used in the apse), which add boldness and grace to the cathedral’s appearance.
