Matsumoto
The Matsumoto is built within the beautiful natural surroundings of the Japan Alps. Completed in 1594, it is the city’s principal landmark. It is one of the only four remaining original castle structures in Japan, and is registered as a National Treasure. It also serves as the southern gateway to the Japan Alps National Park, visited by thousands of tourists during the open season. It is also known as the Fukashi-Jo and the Kurou-Jo. The area within the innermost moat is called the "hon-maru", the inner circle; the area within the second moat is called "nino-maru", the second circle; and the third moat is called "sanno-maru", the third circle.
