Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore National Memorial contains the huge rock sculptures of the heads of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The biggest sculpture completed by hand, it is located in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, U.S.A. The stone heads are carved in granite on the northeast side of Mt. Rushmore. They represent the philosophies of the nation’s founding, political philosophy, preservation, and expansion and conservation.
Jonah Robinson of the South Dakota State Historical Society first suggested the building of the monument. Work began in 1927 under Gutzon Borglum who died before the sculpture could be completed. His son continued the work and finished in 1941. It is estimated that about 2,000,000 people visit the monument each year.
