Transmediale.05 Opens in Berlin
Gravicells - Seiko Mikami, Sota Ichikawa (jp).
BERLIN, GERMANY.- Transmediale.05 opens today in Berlin. Interactivity is a feature many of the installations on display in the exhibition area of Haus der Kulturen der Welt and at Podewil and Parochialkirche (Marnix de Nijs & Edwin van der Heide) have in common. Other works like 'The Catalogue' by Chris Oakley (uk) offer a political perspective on the theme BASICS, and sometimes they even combine both – as in the installation 'naked bandit/here, not here/white sovereign 3.0' by the artists' collective Knowbotic Research (de/ch).

Unless specified otherwise, the installations will be on display during the festival (February 4 – 8) daily from 10 – 22 hrs at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

Gravicells - Seiko Mikami, Sota Ichikawa (jp). In the centre of the installation space is a 6m x 6m floor composed of 225 units of cell-like grids with built-in sensors. The moment a participant stands and moves on it, the variation of his or her position, weight, and speed is automatically and continuously measured, analysed, and reflected on sound, LED light and geometrical images, generating substantial spatial changes. In this artwork, it is possible for us to develop a new human sense through feeling gravity differently than usual and having new perception of the body. Walking freely in the site, visitors are able to feel gravity that they are seldom aware of, resistance to it, and the effects caused by other participants. Additionally, the position of the exhibition space is simultaneously measured by GPS, so that the installation site is moving relative to gravity as well.
