Tapies at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art
Antoni Tapies, Egg-basket and newspaper, 1970, installation. Private Collection, Barcelona.
TOKYO, JAPAN.- The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art presents Tapies. The show presents a compilation of works by one of Spain's most prominent artists, Antoni Tapies. A number of works on display are appearing in Japan for the first time. On view through May 29, 2005. Born in Barcelona in 1923, Antoni Tapies is a prominent figure in Spanish contemporary art and a successor of the spirit of Picasso, Dalí and Miró and other geniuses of the twentieth century. His works, with their strong links to the culture of his native Catalonia and to its tragic history, encompassing the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), World War II (1939-45) and the political opression of the Franco regime (1939-75), are deeply imbued with the artist's striving after freedom of spirit and expression.
