Abstract Steel Sculptures by James Wolfe
James Wolfe, Site, 1974, Painted steel, H. 29.5 x W. 122 x D. 116 inches, Collection of the Artist.
DOYLESTOWN, PA.- An installation of four, large painted steel sculptures created by artist James Wolfe will be on view at The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown from March 24 through June 24, 2007. The outdoor display, located between the Museum and the Bucks County Library Center, is part of an Outdoor Sculpture Program highlighting the work of contemporary American sculptors. This ongoing series of sculpture exhibits is sponsored by Fulton Bank, Premier Division.

Wolfe's abstract sculptures are often based on a fascination with line and rhythm, with complex, intricate designs that resemble cursive writing or delicate linear drawings. Describing Wolfe's work as "calligraphic structures," art historian and critic Karen Wilkin goes on to say that the artist "has developed an idiosyncratic way of drawing with slender elements that sets him apart from most of his contemporaries" (André Emmerich Gallery, James Wolfe catalogue, 1985).

A former resident of New Hope, Pennsylvania, Wolfe currently resides in Los Angeles, California. His distinguished international career includes solo exhibitions at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. and the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, West Virginia. He has also exhibited his work at galleries in Germany and Canada, and his work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Storm King Art Center. The James Wolfe Sculpture Trail, located at the base of the Inclined Plane in the Southern Allegheny Mountains in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, features 10 of the artist's sculptures commissioned by the Johnstown Flood Museum, The Centennial Committee (Johnstown Flood) and Bethlehem Steel.

The welded steel sculptures in this exhibit-created in 1974 and 1984-are works from the collection of the artist.
