From Soho Road to the Punjab at The Brunei Gallery

LONDON.- The Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London, presents a groundbreaking visual arts exhibition, ‘From Soho Road to the Punjab’. For the first time in the UK, an exhibition has been produced charting the rise and rise of Bhangra; the drum-driven music and dance from the Punjab which is now heard on streets and on dance floors throughout the UK.

This strikingly designed exhibition is produced to tour, is demountable, and will comprise of period photography, album sleeves, promotional art and rare examples of print media from the British Asian media explosion that spread the Bhangra sound across the world. The narrative panels of "From Soho Road to the Punjab" explore the Bhangra phenomenon in an inclusive and accessible manner, showcasing the stories of pioneering individuals who have championed the UK Bhangra scene. Our "exhibition champions", such as journalist and DJ Boy Chana, Alaap stalwart Kalyan and DJs favourite San-j Sanj, have allowed us unique access to their personal collections of never-before-seen photographs and archives.

The exhibition is currently on show at The Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London, until 15 September 2007 and we invite you to come along and see it.
