Lucie Chan: between, and in tears at Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA.- The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia presents Lucie Chan: between, and in tears. Born in Guyana and educated in Canada, Halifax now provides the backdrop for Lucie Chan's delicate and evocative drawing-based art practice. Manifesting in many forms - charcoal sketches, paper installations, animations - Chan's artwork articulates themes such as longing, rootlessness and diaspora. For this site-specific installation, between, and in tears, Chan remounts a project originally displayed in Quebec. She combines large objects (tear-drop shaped sculptures made from and suspended from the gallery) with animations and drawings into a unique, evocative installation.

"I am interested in developing a drawing language which moves from 2-D to the three dimensional world but also exists in movement while engaging in the intimacy of working with participants." -- Lucie Chan

This exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with essays by Ms Chainey-Gagnon, and by Ray Cronin, AGNS Senior Curator.

Lucie Chan holds a BFA from Alberta College of Art and Design and an MFA from Nova Scotia between, and in tearsCollege of Art and Design. She has participated in several group exhibitions, in Canada but mainly in Halifax, Toronto, and Montreal. In 2003, she completed the Artist in Residency's Program at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Lucie Chan completed a Self-Directed, Creative Residency at the Banff Center For Arts in 2004. Currently her work is part of a 2-year traveling exhibition, Just My Imagination, which includes the works of 14 contemporary Canadian drawing-based artists. Her exhibition between, and in tears, was originally mounted at the Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec in late 2006. She will be part of a two-person exhibition at the Peterborough Art Gallery in early 2007.
