NEW YORK, NY.- The Salmagundi Club, will host two art exhibitions of work executed by Salmagundi artist members. These two exhibits are entitled "Salmagundi Potpourri" and "Portraits: Self, Family, & Pets." These exhibitions will run concurrently in two of the Club's galleries. They open Monday, August 10, and run through Friday, September 11. Most of the artwork is for sale within a wide range of affordable prices.
Variety and diversity are the hallmarks of the "Potpourri" exhibition, an annual event open to all Salmagundi artist members. Taking its cue from the "mixed bag" characteristics of real life potpourris, this exhibit will show a variety of high quality paintings, sculptures, graphics and photography. The focus of "Potpourri" is to display not only the wide range of artistic techniques, but also to spotlight each artist's own personal expressions and unique aesthetic vision. For an exhibition that combines so many of the myriad possibilities of artistic styles, "Potpourri" is not to be missed. Visitors are invited to view "Potpourri" in the Salmagundi Club's Upper Gallery.
The other exhibit, "Portraits: Self, Family, & Pets," brings a more eclectic approach to the art of portraiture. By limiting the identity of the "sitter" to animals, family members, or the artists themselves, many of the pressures and constraints of professional portraiture are lifted, allowing the artist the freedom to work in a more relaxed and creative mood. The results can often be unique and delightful. Visitors to "Portraits: Self, Family, & Pets" can expect to find more surprises and fun than are usually found in traditional portraiture. "Portraits: Self, Family, & Pets" can be seen in the Salmagundi Lower Gallery adjacent to the Club's intimate and inviting dining room.
The Salmagundi Club, an arts organization since 1871, is dedicated primarily to the exhibition of fine art - paintings, graphics, sculpture and photography - created by living American artists. The elegant brownstone mansion that serves as the Club's home continues to be a treasured place for artists, collectors and the public. Through the years, the Club has been the singular gathering place for such great artists as Thomas Moran, Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase, Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Carl Rungius, Ernest Blumenschein, Charles Dana Gibson, and many others.
