ISTANBUL. The Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) will be hosting the work of students from the Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Program (VA/VCD). The exhibition called “Discharge”, which will be open to art lovers at the SSM from 10 to 16 August 2009, is the first exhibition of Sabancı University students to be held at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum.
Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum Director Dr. Nazan Ölçer offered the following remarks about the exhibition of the university students’ work: “It gives me great pleasure to be exhibiting the work our university students for the first time. Up until now, our museum has hosted the work of many world-famous artists. I have no doubt whatsoever that the students and budding artists whose work we are hosting in our museum today will make us very proud in the future with their own world-class artistic production”.
The exhibition includes selected works of painting, sculpture, installation and multimedia (photography, sound, 3-D, video, etc.) produced by students during the past three years. The Discharge exhibition provides students of the Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Visual Communication Design Program the opportunity to display the work they have accomplished in three years while including the results of the creative activities they have accomplished between 2007 and 2009.
“Discharge”, the theme of this year’s exhibition of the work of second-, third-, fourth-year and master’s students in the Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Program, draws attention to the future potential of the concepts and work the students have developed in the course of their education. Some of the work being exhibited consists of works that have been presented in important international venues as works of art and academic manifestos. The exhibition provides the opportunity to become acquainted with new ideas generated by a new generation, the future of the creative sector, and the talent encouraged under the guidance of masterly professionals in the Sabancı University VA/VCD program.
The exhibition can be described, not as the perception of the static analysis of an application in the fine arts, design or any other creative field, but rather as the choice of an artificial moment designed to imagine the possible future expansion of the students and their work by taking a look at their works of art, projects and ideas. In other words, the exhibition leaves the viewer face to face with a strong discharge generated in tandem with developing ideas, national/international cultural initiatives and the critical response of the students to historical and cultural change.
According to the Program faculty who teach the students whose work is being exhibited, “A student exhibition should be dedicated to possible potential for success as much as it is to past achievement. This exhibition and the work of the students should be viewed as new ideas that challenge the visual intuition we have developed with respect to ourselves and our lives. “Discharge” reflects the progress of the development of a sense of self-evaluation and the practice of critical discourse that will enable students to coalesce with the international platform.”
The influence of the Sabancı University staff, who have broken the barriers between disciplines that have traditionally been separated, forming the foundation for innovative thinking by opening the way to a flowing synergy, encouraging interdisciplinary syntheses with their own personal approaches to art and design, can be seen in the creative works exhibited by their students.
The Sabancı University Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Program creates an environment that searches for contemporary solutions to current problems and generates new forms of thought.
