NEW YORK, NY.- Jeff Bailey Gallery presents All This and Not Ordinary, a group exhibition featuring the work of Chris Duncan, Joseph Hart and Fabienne Lasserre.

Duncan, Hart and Lasserre utilize a wide range of materials in unlikely combinations. Painting detritus is reclaimed as a medium for drawing; sculpture is co-opted as a vehicle for painting; and drawing is used as a tool to mimic gestural painting and explore abstraction.

Chris Duncan uses mirrored paper as a surface for painting, stitching or collage. Human Abstraction (4, 5 and 7) each feature a circular form composed of hundreds of hand painted multi-colored dots. The surfaces partially reflect the viewer, but are obscured by spray paint and stitched paper. In Mass 5, the drawing ground appears to have undergone a mysterious chemical reaction. Balanced in the center is a tactile colorful orb, composed of dollops of dried paint removed from the artist’s studio floor.

In Joseph Hart’s mixed media drawings, color, line and form have equal presence. Gestural marks are as pronounced as representational imagery. All-over compositions feature fragments of antique vessels and statuary, arranged in lyrical patterns. In Untitled (Vessel Study) rectangular outlines serve as both a compositional tool and framing device.

Fabienne Lasserre combines linen, paint, steel, paper and handmade felt to create forms that stretch, lean and drape. Her multifarious sculptures can mimic human interaction while also implying sci-fi creatures. In Halsey, twisted, tube-like “arms” provide a structural support for a smooth curving façade, a surface then utilized for painting. This and other works seem to have a front and a back, representing what the artist calls “the excluded middle.”

Chris Duncan has had two solo exhibitions at the gallery and has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout the U.S. and internationally, including Baer Ridgway Exhibitions, San Francisco; Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco (solo); Alice Gallery, Brussels; Nakaochiai Gallery, Tokyo (solo); and Lump Gallery, Raleigh, North Carolina (solo). Duncan is the co-creator of the art based zine project, HOT AND COLD. He is a 2006 recipient of the San Francisco Bay Guardian’s Goldie Award in Visual Art. He received his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2003. Duncan lives and works in Oakland, California.

Joseph Hart’s solo show, Out of Moments, is on view at Galerie Vidal Saint-Phalle, Paris, France, May 6 – June 30. He has exhibited his work at David Krut Projects, New York; Galerie Markus Winter, Berlin; Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, Brooklyn, and The Bronx Museum of the Arts, among other venues. He is a 2005 recipient of The Saltonstall Foundation Residency Fellowship. In 1999, he received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Hart lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Fabienne Lasserre has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Hace Mucho que No Te Veo at Espacio Matacuna 100, Santiago, Chile; 3 obras at Museo Textil de Oaxaca, Mexico; and Others at Virgil de Voldère Gallery, New York (solo). She is a 2008-09 recipient of the La Curtiduría residency in Oaxaca, Mexico. She completed her MFA at Columbia University in 2004. Lasserre lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
