NEW YORK, NY.- After a successful 18 months initiating a public art program for Times Square, the Times Square Alliance enters its second phase with an open call to arts organizations and artists for future contemporary art and performance. Art organizations and artists in all creative disciplines can submit letters of interest to produce a single art project or a series for anytime between September 2010 and December 2012.

“Times Square Alliance Public Art Program will bring temporary high-quality, cutting-edge art and performance to Times Square’s public spaces, so that it is known globally as a place where ordinary people encounter authentic, ever-changing urban art in multiple forms and media. “ said Tim Tompkins, President of the Alliance.

The program has already supported a number of highly successful projects such as Paul Ramirez Jonas’ “Key to the City” by Creative Time in Times Square until June 27. In May, 2010 Tony Award winner Christine Jones presented her “Theatre for One.” That followed Arto Lindsey’s cellphone procession with Performa ’09, Morehead & Moorhead’s melting “Ice Heart” for Valentine Day and Sofia Maldonado’s 42nd Street Mural with the Cuban Artists Fund. Alexandre Arrechea, Isabella Rossellini, Guy Ben Ner, Loris Greaud have blasted their videos across the giant LED screens.

“We are looking for projects that will have an impact in a neighborhood that is defined by dynamic activity and competing visual stimulation,” said Glenn Weiss, Manager of Public Art and Design at the Times Square Alliance. “We want ideas from curators, artists and organizations that consider how their projects will change or affect the space and how it will interact with more than 350,000 people each day.”

Art projects and events can occur in the new Broadway plazas and Duffy Square in Times Square and other public spaces throughout the Theater District, 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Letters of Interest are due on July 15, 2010 and should not exceed 500 words. Applications should include history of the organization or resume of the artist or curator, plus five images of relevant past work. Applicants with accepted proposals will be invited to enter into a discussion with the Times Square Alliance about executing their work.
