NEW YORK, NY.- The American Academy in Rome announced that Laurie Anderson, RAAR’06, will both curate and perform at the upcoming Cabaret in New York City on October 26th. The Los Angeles Times recently called Ms. Anderson “the most important multimedia artist of our time.” Her performance at last year’s Cabaret, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with Lou Reed, was one of the evening’s highlights. Ms. Anderson’s Cabaret performance this year will be culled from a prolific new body of work. Ms. Anderson recently concluded a week of performances at BAM’s Next Wave Festival, interweaving her virtuosity as a composer, violinist, visual artist, story-teller and live performer in a collection of short plays called “Delusion.” Her recently released studio album, Homeland, is her first in nearly ten years and includes songs dealing with issues such as US foreign policy, torture, economic collapse, the erosion of personal freedom, medical malpractice, religion and cynicism.

In addition to Anderson, Cabaret-goers will experience performances by Lisa Bielawa, FAAR’10, Don Byron, FAAR’10, Molissa Fenley, FAAR’08, John Kelly, FAAR’07, Nico Muhly, David Sanford, FAAR’03, and the Pittsburgh Collective, a reading by Rosanna Warren, RAAR’01, and video installations curated by Laurie Simmons, RAAR’05, with Kate Gilmore, FAAR’08, Marie Lorenz, FAAR’09, Carrie Mae Weems, FAAR’06, and the 2011 Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize winner Karen Yasinsky.

The 2010 Cabaret will kick off the festivities of the Academy’s Centenary Celebration, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the merger of the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies in Rome. Net proceeds from the Cabaret will support the American Academy in Rome.

Cabaret tickets are available online at $150 per person, $300 at the door. Due to limited seating and high demand for attendance, the American Academy asks that all guests register well in advance of the event.
