LEEDS.- A new display by The Hepworth Wakefield in partnership with Harvey Nichols Leeds will be available to view until February 2012.

The Hepworth Wakefield at Harvey Nichols, is a new temporary display of works by artist Clare Woods and designer Laura Slater. The display at the store’s Fourth Floor Café has been devised and supported by Harvey Nichols Leeds in partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield and artists Laura Slater and Clare Woods.

Laura Slater said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase my work to new audiences and present textile design in a fresh and innovative way. I’ve always wanted to apply my designs to new surfaces within a sight specific format. To be able to do this in a prestigious location like Harvey Nichols, together with The Hepworth Wakefield, this has become an exciting reality.”

Andy Berrington, Display Manager at Harvey Nichols said: “December and January are particularly busy months for us, with over 35,000 shoppers expected to come through our doors each week. By working with The Hepworth Wakefield we can offer our shoppers something a little extra during their visit. We’re delighted to be able to get involved and help to showcase cultural talent on our doorstep to our audiences.”

The display features limited edition prints by artist Clare Woods, which are available to purchase. Produced in September 2011 from her studio in Hereford, the limited editions have been produced to compliment her current exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield The Unquiet Head, on show until 29 January 2012. It features new, large-scale paintings measuring up to 10.5 x 6 metres, inspired by the Yorkshire landscape, in particular Brimham Rocks and Ilkley Moor. Clare has a major new commission currently being installed in the Olympic Park ready for next summer.

Textile designer Laura Slater has created a site-specific installation for the display. Laura has been developing her design practice since graduating from The Royal College of Art in 2008 and now runs her busy studio and print workshop from Wakefield, creating bespoke textiles and products that she screen-prints by hand. She recently participated in Origin Contemporary Craft Fair in London and Made11 Fair in Brighton. Her work is available to purchase from The Hepworth Wakefield shop and in addition, Laura runs hand-on workshops at the gallery and The Art House in Wakefield.

Since opening to the public on 21 May 2011, The Hepworth Wakefield has welcomed over 330,000 visitors, doubling its initial first year target and received awards from Elle Decoration and Conde Nast Traveller, to become one of the country’s most inspiring cultural venues.

LAURA SLATER (b. 1983) creates bespoke textile surfaces and products screen printed by hand. Through an interplay of colour and pattern with architectural, organic and hand drawn elements, design concepts evolve from line, mark and texture. Her work developed from the exploration of straight, hand-drawn, lines manipulated through a range of folding techniques and the layering of eleven variations of linear architectural configurations.

Laura’s range of textile homeware is available at The Hepworth Wakefield gallery shop. Yorkshire’s major new art gallery supports new and emerging artists and designers from the region and features ranges of artist design-led products in the gallery shop.

CLARE WOODS (b. 1972) graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1999 and has since exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and America. Her recent exhibitions include: The Dark Monarch: Magic and Modernity in British Art, Tate St. Ives, Cornwall; Monuments with a Horizon Line II, Buchmann Galerie, Berlin; Watercolours, Buchmann Box, Berlin; Cemetery Bends, Pilar Parra & Romero, Madrid and Deaf Man’s House, The Chisenhale Gallery, London.
