NEW YORK, N.Y.- International artist David Lamelas was born in Argentina in 1946, at 21 immigrated to England and then to Los Angeles in the late 1970’s. His works examine the limitations of space, temporality, and the possibilities of creating alternative processes of communication. His 1968 transformation of the Argentinian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale spurred his fascination with travel, modes of discourse and singularity.

Lamelas exhibits a site-specific installation at Maccarone Gallery-evidence of an evolving process begun in the mid-1960s with his “Corner Pieces.” Ideas collected through an embryonic process of deassociation, objectivity and documentation are put to task in a series of architectural interventions cutting through and around the structure of the gallery.

“Corner Piece” is re-examined and expanded upon in four variations of the original. These modifications of the gallery in conjunction with the flow of music by Jorge Chikiar and John King create both a unique piece and a forum for a sonic intervention within architectural intervention. Through sound and collaboration, Lamelas disperses the locus of site and subject specificity, iterating his work as it moves throughout the space and amongst his collaborators and audience.

Employing a process of “audio swapping” via the internet, they have worked to craft an improvisation for processed viola concerto and analog synthesizers to form a range of musical textures; a recording of the performance will continue to play for the duration of the exhibition.

On January 21st and 28th, Desert People, Lamelas’ seminal 1974 documentary examining modes of American film production, Californian topographies and mass culture vernacular on a Papago Indian Reserve will be screened at the gallery.

Group exhibitions include Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A 1945-1980 with work at the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Pacific Standard Time - Performance Art and Public Art Festival, Los Angeles, the 7th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Basel, the Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis and the Tate Modern, London.

Jorge Chikiar is a multi-disciplinary musician with a wide breadth of experiences in both composition and performance. Recent performances and projects include; Estancia by Ginastera, Teatro Argentina de la Plata for the 2010-2011 Bicentenario; Assistant Director of opera Galileo, Teatro Argentina de la Plata; Obra Pendulum by Steve Reich, Proa Foundation; Sur Polar, Museo Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero.

New York based John King is a composer, guitarist and violist. King has written three operas based on contemporary literature and received commissions from the Kronos Quartet; The Albany Symphony/”Dogs of Desire”; Bang On A Can All-Stars; Mannheim Ballet; New York City Ballet/Diamond Project; Stuttgart Ballet, Stuttgart; Ballets de Monte Carlo; as well as the Merce Cunningham Dance Co. His quartet, Crucible, has premiered many of his compositions at The Stone and The Kitchen.
