KANSAS CITY, MO.- With a limited budget and only 81 days to make vision a reality, Generator Studio has successfully constructed an interactive space in conjunction with Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs 1851–1939 on the grounds of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Sun Pavilion, as pavilions in world’s fairs, is a temporary structure that celebrates innovation and creativity.

“We were honored to be selected as the design team responsible for the world’s fair pavilion,” said Tom Proebstle, Partner + Design Director, Generator Studio. “The Nelson-Atkins is a cultural corner stone of this region. Having a project on campus is a huge opportunity for our firm.”

The pavilion contains more than 150 solar panels which will power lights, air conditioning and interactive displays.

“Nearly every material used to create Sun Pavilion will be re-purposed for another use after the exhibition is complete,” said Mike Kress, Partner + Chief Architect, Generator Studio. “If you break down the various components of this giant Tinker Toy set, you will recognize the various pieces and parts designed for other intended uses. We are proud of the fact that, in addition to being off the grid, there will be minimal material waste.”

Sun Pavilion is a collaborative project that illustrates the creativity and passion in Kansas City. The 25 partners on the design and construction team include Generator Studio, Tm Gratkowski, Brightergy LLC, Thornton Tomasetti, BC Engineers and Prosser Wilbert Construction. The team will present the pavilion as part of the museum’s Innovation Day on June 9.

Hugh “Pat” Uhlmann Curator of Decorative Arts. “The pavilion is a natural extension of Inventing the Modern World, since world’s fairs have always been recognized for their innovative pavilions.”

Inventing the Modern World, which features nearly 200 decorative arts from past world’s fairs, runs from April 14 through Aug. 19. The presenting sponsor in Kansas City is Helzberg Diamonds.
