A woman looks at the painting 'Der Tiger', 1912, by German artist Franz Marc. EFE/Rolf Haid.
THE HAGUE.- In the early 20th century, a group of artists caused a huge furore in the Munich art world. Calling themselves Der Blaue Reiter, the artists produced expressive, brightly coloured, lyrical paintings which were to prompt the development of Expressionism in Germany. The core members of the group were Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and kindred spirit Franz Marc. Although the group was so important for the later development of modern art, this exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in spring 2010 will be the first major retrospective of its work ever held in the Netherlands. Many of the works were seen earlier as part of the successful Kandinsky exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. ... More |

Albert Müller: Paintings, Sculptures and Prints at Kunstmuseum Basel

Albert Müller, Bildnis Bruna, 1924.
BASEL.- The Basel painter, draftsman, printmaker and sculptor Albert Müller (18971926) is considered one of the main exponents of Swiss Expressionism. Müller received his initial artistic training in his native city, at a glass-painting studio and at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule, the local vocational arts school. Galvanised by the example of Cuno Amiet, he was soon using luminous colours that diverged strongly from the dark tones typical of the established painters of the area. His work first began attracting the notice of a wider audience in 1919. Although Müller moved to Ticino two years later, he retained close ties to Basels cultural life. His active engagement with the avant-garde set off a period of intense artistic development: he took much of his inspiration from Louis Moilliet and Edvard Munch until his encounter with the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in 1923 and subsequent friendship with the artist provided ... Ariel Hassan to Show Works with a Degree of Theatricality at Greenaway Art

Hassan orchestrates his tableaux from a current concern with fears and phobias part of the complex web of propositions hinted at by the author/artist.
ADELAIDE.- Ariel Hassan is primarily a painter, but his practice extends to sculpture / installation and photography. The title of his latest exhibition Today all your plans are going to be successful! is patently ironic, as the viewer, who is invited to have a great day will be confronted by demons; the ghosts generated from memory, anger ,frustration, fears and phobias temper the greeting. This exhibition is triggered from a more personal perspective than some of the more analytical investigations in his previous shows. This new exhibition has a degree of theatricality a shower of meteors about to hit; paintings on hands and feet, prepare to give chase; a colourful and noisy, immersive upper level of the gallery (with a fragmented figure lying on its surface). All elements induce a smile, as everything is held in one suspended moment, like the pause button pressed ... More |

Kunsthaus Bregenz Presents Candice Breitz's Best Known Video Installations

Candice Breitz, The cast of New York, New York, 2009. A Performa Commission with Kunsthaus Bregenz. Produced by Performa in association with The Power Plant, Toronto and Scott Macaulay. Photo: Jason Schmidt,
BREGENZ.- Though Candice Breitz (b. 1972 Johannesburg, South Africa) has focused largely on creating multi-channel video installations since 1999, her approach to the moving image grows out of an earlier body of photographic work, in which she made extensive use of photomontage and cut-and-paste strategies. In composing her multi-channel video installations, Breitz deploys both freshly shot footage and material drawn from familiar films, modifying her source material digitally in the working. Amongst other themes, Breitzs video oeuvre reflects critically on the narrative structure of Hollywood cinema, the counter-projections of fans and their idols, and the challenges posed to the individual and individuality within contemporary media culture. The Kunsthaus Bregenz presents a selection of Breitzs best known video ... More |

Delaware Art Museum Presents Women Collared for Work WILMINGTON, DE.- The Delaware Art Museum presents Women Collared for Work, featuring paintings, drawings, sculptures, and mixed media installations by eight female artists, on view February 6, 2010 March 21, 2010. The artists explore both the well-known contributions and anonymous stories of women spanning more than 100 years of history1889 to 1999. They interpret the collar as a symbol for the restraint, inspiration, and innovation of powerful female icons representing a range of occupations. The theme of being collared was chosen as a metaphor for womens issues because of the symbolic connotations of the word. A collar can be an article of clothing or a restraint around the neck, and it was the contrast between its uses as an adornment versus a shackle that inspired this selection of works. Each of the artists created work inspired by a range of years as follows: ... More
Bielefelder Kunstverein Opens Group Exhibition "In the Event of Suspicion" BIELEFELD.- The group exhibition »In the Event of Suspicion« understands suspicion as a medium allowing both artists and visitors to question aesthetic, political, social, and media-related issues. On view are works by six international contemporary artists who practice methods of observation and analysis, enquiring into forms of composition and matters of representation. Much, if not everything, can come in for suspicion these days: news coverage, the workings of the media, economic and political developments, questions of sustainability and the conditions and possibilities governing international collaboration. But in order to formulate a strategy of suspicion in the context of art, the understanding of the term has to be broadened. It cannot indicate only the establishing of proof or methods of verifying negative presumptions any more; suspicion denotes, much rather, acting in a positive sense with a goal in mind, an essentially critical and sceptical attitude towards the giv ... Two-Person Exhibition Focusing on Ancestry, Nature, and Form at MACLA SAN JOSE, CA.- MACLA present Castillo and Mariana Garibay in a two-person exhibition that focuses on ancestry, nature, and form featuring site-specific installation and works on paper. These two artists employ divergent approaches to working with form and landscape in their esthetic pursuit. Castillos work has hints of ancestral, historical symbolism. She selects her materials for their historical relevance and presented larger than life, embodying multiple layers of meaning. Her current work is a commentary of the history of capitalism and the role that it has played in her lineage. Her installation Brown Sugar addresses her Columbian lineage that is made up of Pilipina, African, and Spanish, which has a history both proud and unsettling. Little known is the use of slavery in the production of sugar in her home country of Columbia. Representing the many that are a product of that history, Castillo has created a fict ... More

Lehman College Art Gallery Shows a Selection of Work by 21 Contemporary Artists BRONX, NY.- Nature, Once Removed: The (Un)Natural World in Contemporary Drawing presents a selection of work by 21 contemporary artists who use drawing to explore our alienated relationship to nature, creating oblique narratives inflected with irony, anxiety, grotesquerie and satire. Much of the stylization of plants, animals and geological forms in the show bears the influence of popular culture, demonstrating the degree to which our contemporary conception of the natural world has been shaped by cartoons and advertising. The work in the show varies significantly in its treatment of the theme, alternately mythic (Huey, Saul), abstract (Crump, Herrera, Taylor), fantastic (Fueki, Hancock, Karpov, Ulivo), political (Esquivel, Piehl), nostalgic (Barrett, Panter), pessimistic (Di Genova, Hoving), deadpan (Brown, Patch) and wryly funny (De Los Angeles, Johnston, Peterson, Wesley). A variety of formal and technical means are on display, including woodburning, bravura brushwork, meticu ... More
