Lawrence Steigrad Fine Arts deals in Old Master and British paintings, drawings, and sculpture primarily dating from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, with a particular emphasis on portraiture.

NEW YORK, NY.- In an exclusive interview with artdaily, Lawrence Steigrad, the owner of Lawrence Steigrad Fine Arts, offers a deep dive into the nuanced world of the Old Masters market. As the last gallery in America specializing in 17th-century Dutch paintings, Steigrad provides a unique perspective on a market often overshadowed by contemporary art. He discusses everything from the rising demand for female artists and "almost modern" old master paintings to the critical role of provenance research in the digital age. Steigrad also shares invaluable insights on how he sources his inventory, the evolving profile of collectors, and what he believes the future holds for this enduring segment of the art world. ... Félix Vallotton in seinem Pariser Atelier, 1915. Archiv Hahnloser/Jaeggli Stiftung.

WINTERTHUR.- To mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Félix Vallotton (1865–1925), the Kunst Museum Winterthur is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to him. Over 100 works are being shown at two locations – in the museums Reinhart am Stadtgarten and Villa Flora – including numerous major works such as the iconic La blanche et la noire. 2025 marks the centenary of the death of the Lausanne artist Félix Vallotton. The Winterthur anniversary exhibition offers a valid overview of Vallotton’s art with works from all creative phases, genres and techniques. In addition to paintings and woodcuts, it also includes sculptures and drawings. Conceptually, the exhibition is based on Lost Illusions, thus referring to Honoré Balzac’s novel of the same name. This opens up new perspectives on Vallotton’s art, encouraging us to question the artist’s prosaic view of the world. Like Balzac’s Illusions perdues, Vallotton’s art is a precisely observed, critical depict ... More

New book from Taschen offers a sweeping look at Dalí's unseen works and artistic evolution   Masters of Surrealism: A new show explores the movement's diverse voices   Louis Marchesano named Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Conservation

One of the titans of modern painting, Salvador Dalí is the quintessential surrealist but also a performer, designer, and visionary.

NEW YORK, NY.- Salvador Dalí has become synonymous with Surrealism. His soft watches, burning giraffes, and lobster telephones are like a natural language of dreams. But there are many more surprises hidden in his work. Dalí was driven by a willingness to engage with the world: in his exploration of the Catalonian landscape or his reaction to the shock of the atom bomb with paintings whose elements hover side by side like the particles in atoms. He drafted his own “paranoiac-critical method,” explored optical illusions, double images, and stereoscopic paintings, invented the “surrealist object functioning symbolically,” created gorgeous backdrops for his own ballets, and staged himself as a mustache-wielding genius in photographic collaborations. Himself “painting like an angel,” as critics always admitted, in his later years he turned to the inspiration of classical art, updating and subverting Renaissance imagery in large celestial visions, or his final more private ho ... KNOKKE.- This summer, Maruani Mercier’s annual homage to the icons of modern art turns its lens to Surrealism, not as a single vision, but as a shifting terrain shaped by artists like Salvador Dalí, Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Man Ray, Joan Miró, Francis Picabia and Yves Tanguy, each of whom made the movement unmistakably their own. Far from a fixed style, Surrealism emerged as a field of tension between collective ideals and radical individuality. Rooted in dreams, desire, and psychic liberation, and rising from the ashes of Dada, its influence has long outlasted the conditions that gave rise to it. Officially inaugurated with André Breton’s 'Manifesto of Surrealism' in 1924, the movement sought to free thought from the shackles of reason and morality. Inspired by Freud and Marx, its adherents, poets, philosophers, and painters, ventured into the irrational, the erotic, and the fantastic. Together, these visual artists forged a shared language of dreamscapes, ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- The Frick Collection announced a new site-specific installation by artist Flora Yukhnovich (b. United Kingdom, 1990), in dialogue with François Boucher’s series The Four Seasons, from the museum’s permanent collection. Her mural will cover the walls of the Frick’s Cabinet Gallery, a reimagined space dedicated to the presentation of small-scale displays and contemporary interventions. Yukhnovich will respond to Boucher’s work in her characteristic painting style, a blend of representation and abstraction which draws from art historical traditions while boldly reinterpreting them. Her immersive, energetic works—inspired by the French Rococo, Italian Baroque, and Abstract Expressionist movements—are both modern and timeless, reflecting a rigorous engagement with the legacies of Western painting. “Flora’s clear admiration for the work of Boucher—an artist who is well represented ... DRESDEN.- In a quiet but powerful act of historical reckoning, several small museums across Saxony have been combing through their collections to uncover traces of Nazi-looted art. The results, released after more than a year of research, reveal that two of six museums examined hold objects with direct ties to persecution during the Nazi era. Since late 2023, non-state museums in Saxony have been participating in so-called “initial checks” — detailed provenance investigations funded entirely by the German Lost Art Foundation in Magdeburg. These projects bring in outside experts to sift through inventories, acquisition records, and historical archives dating back to 1933. The goal is to answer difficult questions: where did these objects come from, and who might have lost them under the Nazi regime? The Dresden State Art Collections (SKD) has partnered with six local museums ... More

Paul Jasmin, Josh, San Fernando Valley, 2003 © Paul Jasmin, courtesy of Fahey/Klein Gallery, Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES, CA.- Fade to West is a photographic exhibition that brings together the visionary work of Paul Jasmin and Todd Weaver—two artists who have made tangible the fleetingness of Los Angeles’s beauty and sunsets. Though neither artist was born in California, both were drawn to a city as radiant and restless as them. Now deeply rooted in its culture, they embody its essence—capturing not only its landscapes and people, but its elusive atmosphere. The exhibition pairs Jasmin’s evocative portraits and cinematic vignettes with Weaver’s ethereal scenes of nature, offering a dual portrait of a place defined by light, youth, and transience. Jasmin helped define the visual language of Los Angeles, staging moments of youth and intimacy against the soft glow of the city’s ambient warmth. His photographs are imbued with compassion and quiet curiosity, revealing a version of the city that feels personal, suspended, and tenderly observed. Weaver, meanwhile, explores ... More

Artistic Treasures from Korea, an exhibition that transformed Dresden’s Royal Palace into a vibrant meeting ground between Korean heritage and European history. Over the past months, more than 78,000 visitors explored the show, which closed on August 10, 2025, after captivating audiences with its mix of ancient treasures, royal splendor, and timeless reflections on the meaning of happiness. Staged in the baroque State Apartments and the New Green Vault, the exhibition—created in collaboration with the National Museum of Korea—wove an unexpected dialogue between Korean court art and Saxon opulence. At its heart was a universal question: What does happiness mean? Answers came in many forms: a golden crown that once graced a Silla dynasty monarch, delicate porcelain from Korea’s royal courts, shimmering ... More

Desir takes inspiration from stories and teachings from the Bible, but at the same time his works question canonical Christianity through gestures that undermine colonial power. His oil paintings on wood panel collage a visual world of symbols that reference both contemporary life and historical moments. These works feature allegories that ... More

Alexander Berggruen will feature works by Brittney Leeanne Wiiliams at The Armory Show
NEW YORK, NY.- Alexander Berggruen will present new paintings by Brittney Leeanne Wiiliams at The Armory Show (September 5-7, 2025 / VIP Preview — September 4, 2025). Speaking about her work, Williams stated: My work explores the body as a site of transcendence, memorialization, suffering, and as a liminal device to the mystical. While my paintings are often figurative, my concerns are conceptual as I grapple with the articulation of the body as both subject and object, engaging ideas of presence and absence. In addition, the body, natural world and architecture often blend and reflect each other in my work. I use the color red--symbolic of a signal--to speak to the Black experience, frequently centering a red Black body as the starting place for a painting. This exhibition represents two strands in my current work. First, I draw on biblical genre paintings of angelic ... More

The Henry Art Gallery to present Spirit House and a mural by Charlene Liu
SEATTLE, WA.- Spirit House investigates how contemporary artists of Asian descent challenge the boundary between life and death through art. A thematic exploration of the work of thirty-three Asian American and Asian diasporic artists, Spirit House asks the question, what does it mean to speak to ghosts, inhabit haunted spaces, be reincarnated, or enter different dimensions? Inspired by spirit houses, small devotional structures found throughout Thailand that provide shelter for the supernatural, this exhibition considers how art can bridge the gap between this world and the next. Through the work in the exhibition, contemporary artists connect fragmented family narratives shaped by war, migration, and generational trauma to broader global contexts, creating new narratives that transform their difficult origins. With these artists as guides, Spirit House invites you to commune ... More
